Sri Lanka

At the beginning of this month 2 employees of the Sri Lankan Red Cross were brutally killed. This is a difficult time for Sri Lanka, but I still hope that those responsible will be swiftly brought to justice.

The Sri Lankan government should also reach an appropriate conclusion to the investigation of the brutal murders of 17 Action Contre la Faim aid workers killed 10 months ago.

NGO staff should be immediately released and the practice of forced recruitment by the LTTE stopped.

The government, the LTTE and paramilitary groupings to the conflict should keep in mind that murder and forced recruitment are prohibited under international humanitarian law, and that they must respect the work of humanitarian agencies and refrain from any acts that might jeopardize the safety and security of humanitarian staff or their activities.

The way out of this situation in Sri Lanka is to:
- Return to the negotiating table, to re-establish dialogue between the involved parties and to re-start a peace process.
- Actively work to facilitate access for humanitarian assistance to affected populations including the transportation of materials for approved project activities
- Respect the Sri Lankan Constitution and Law
- Stop human rights violations
