Sicilia, continua l'eruzione dell'Etna. Spettacolari gli zampilli di lava e le colate dalle due bocche effusive del versante orientale del cratere di Sud. In prevalenza si possono osservare le emissioni di "bombe" che raggiungono un centinaio di metri di altezza.

Crisis in the Middle East

Since Palestinian militias and Hezbollah captured Israeli soldiers, Israel has retaliated with what is widely considered to be excessive and disproportionate force. For three soldiers held hostage, million of civilians are now being held hostage. This conflict between the Israeli military and militia elements in Gaza and of Hezbollah has continued to escalate with all sidesusing, with different proportions, rockets and missiles to target civilians and civilian properties. Israel, who obviously has been waiting and preparing this for a long time, is now ready for a ground offensive, while international community is doing nothing to stop the violence. Ordinary Palestinian and Lebanese families are suffering immensely and ahumanitarian crisis is arising due to the destruction and blockages.

Immediate steps must be taken to end the ongoing attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure. Such attacks are a blatant breach of international humanitarian law. According to Article 147 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, "extensive destruction ... not justified by military necessity and carried out unlawfully and wantonly," is a grave breach of the Geneva Conventions and constitutes a war crime. Likewise Article 33 prohibits "collective penalties and likewise all measures of intimidation or of terrorism".

Virginia était en Belgique pour quelques tours, et Aurore et moi avons eu l’honneur, et surtout le plaisir, de passer toute une soirée avec elle, avant qu’elle reparte à Managua. Tu nous manques énormément Virg et faudrait vraiment qu’on pense une fois pour toute a venir te voir au Nicaragua !

La semana pasada volví a Belgrado después de 6 años… la ciudad a cambiado muchísimo, y fue maravilloso volver a caminar por sus calles. Fue una pena haberme quedado tan poco.

El 7 de julio, el Mencho se casó con la linda Karina, en un pueblito cerca de Ámsterdam. Mucha felicidad a los novios, y gracias por la fiesta tan buena (y gracias a Alain por su nuevo paso de baile!).

Earthquake in Yogyakarta

Below, a person injured in the earthquake sleeps near the garage of the village chief's home in Cangkring, Bantul. Overcrowded local hospitals have not been able to admit all of the injured from the disaster.

Manifestazioni a Giakarta contro la pornografia

Varie migliaia di persone, appartenenti ai diversi gruppi islamici del Paese, hanno protestato oggi a Giakarta davanti al palazzo del Parlamento per chiedere una legge contro la pornografia. Tra le richieste, la possibilità di proibire il bacio in pubblico, foto, film e la pubblicazione di poemi erotici… no comment…

Last night, we celebrated Nadia’s birthday at Sergio’s… HAPPY BIRTHDAY Nadia! And thanks for the lovely time! We after went to see a jazz concert in Flagey since this week end there was a Jazz Marathon in Brussels, with loads of free jazz concerts everywhere in town (sorry for the low quality of the picture… my battery was dying… although it has quiet an artistic look!!!)

Imminent eruption!

Clouds of hot gasses spew from Mt. Merapi on Sunday. Reaching temperatures of 1,000 degrees Celsius, these deadly clouds are belching from the volcano every two to five minutes. Today, Monday, the eruption seems to be imminent! Population living in the danger zone within a seven-kilometre radius of the crater, and that earlier refused to evacuate, are finally leaving their homes, not knowing when they will be able to come back.

La Spagna e l’Italia sono sempre ed ancora le porte di entrata in Europa per molti immigrati subsahariani. Encuentro con Susana Baca en Bruselas

El 12 de abril pasado, fui al concierto, aquí en Bruselas, de una gran dama de la música Peruana: Susana Baca! El concierto fue mágico, porque Susana Baca tiene la facultad de transmitir miles de emociones a través de sus canciones. Quizás, el momento que mas me gustó, fue cuando cantó una canción en napolitano!
Después del concierto, tuve el gran placer de conocerla, porque ella es muy amiga de mis padres (fue ella que les hizo su fiesta de despedida en Lima!). Aquí una fotito… desgraciadamente no de muy buena calidad!

Sri Lanka: tensions rise

Last Tuesday, a suicide bombing on the army headquarters in Colombo has heightened fears of a return to all out war in Sri Lanka. Thousands of people fled their homes in the North as the military launched fresh air strikes on Tamil Tiger targets.
Today, near the village of Welikanda in the eastern district of Batticaloa, 250km north-east of Colombo, Tamil Tiger rebels have launched deadly attacks on a breakaway faction they accuse of receiving military-backing. On paper, a ceasefire signed in 2002 remains in place. But with this latest violence, its future seems uncertain…

I was in Sri Lanka last October for work, and I had the opportunity to visit projects in the South (Galle) and in the LTTE controlled areas, up in the North. In Kilinochchi, the most difficult thing to witness when you go around is all the “transit” camps… some for the tsunami-affected population – surrounded by NGOs and international organisations logos – and the others for war IDPs. Mines field is another common thing in the Vanni.
Here is a picture in one of these fields, with the women de-mining unit. These girls are between 18 and 21 years old, and they work for the Humanitarian Demining Unit – Norwegian People’s Aid. In the Tamil culture these girls’ occupation is not seen as appropriate, and most of them have left their families to become deminer.
